 | Parliamentary Candidate - Nick King |
 |

Nick's Experience
Nick has been a Conservative since he was 13. His first political activity was delivering leaflets in the 1979 general election and he progressed to be Chairman of Devon Young Conservatives.
In 2005 he managed the parliamentary election campaign for Tobias Ellwood in Bournemouth East, gaining the largest pro Conservative swing in Dorset.
Nick is a Councillor for Littledown and Iford ward in Bournemouth. He won the seat at a by election in 2005, overturning a Liberal Democrat majority of 700, replacing it with a majority of 920 for the Conservatives. His ward in Bournemouth includes the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dean Court (the home of AFC Bournemouth football club) and the area's largest private employer, J P Morgan Chase.
About Nick
Nick was born in Cambridge in 1965 where his family were in business and farming. Nick was educated in Hertfordshire and North Devon and trained as an agricultural surveyor after completing his A Levels.
His family have run their own businesses for seven generations and Nick followed this trend by starting his own company at the age of 25. Dealing in employee relocation, Nick steered this company to the top of the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 and to win the Virgin Customer Services Award within eight years.
Nick now co-owns cabaret restaurants and has his own property management company in Bournemouth. He still undertakes consultancy work in relocation and is considered one of the country's leading experts in employee relocation policies.
Outside of business, Nick has used his skills to great effect in raising money for local charities. He and his business partner supported the establishment of 'Over the Rainbow' in Bournemouth, he is a Director of Bournemouth Pride and is a Treasurer and Trustee of the Mayor of Bournemouth's Charity Appeal.
Nick has lived around Bournemouth and Poole for over ten years and loves the area. He's at his happiest walking his dog, Harry, in the Dorset countryside or on our unspoilt beaches. His other interests include reading, opera, windsurfing and kayaking. He is proud to be the godfather to three boys; James, Luke and Freddie and takes time out to see them whenever he can. He also has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Eurovision Song Contest, go on, ask him a question!
Campaigning on...
Mid Dorset and North Poole Conservatives are working hard on a number of local issues:
A Fair Deal for Dorset: Dorset's councils receive some of the lowest grant settlements in the country. Yet we are the subject of some of the greatest development pressure brought about by the unelected regional assembly. Mid Dorset and North Poole Conservatives are campaigning for a Fair Deal for Dorset and repatriation of development control to our local communities.
Saving the Green Belt around Corfe Mullen and Lytchett Minster is a priority. Encouraging the development of affordable housing for local people on brownfield sites in our towns and villages and ensuring that developments are not environmentally intrusive.
Campaigning for improved transport links throughout our area. We urgently need improvements to the A31 and A35 in preparation for the 2012 Olympics in Weymouth.
Local bus services require additional funding and should be made a priority once a fair funding formula is found for Dorset. Mid Dorset and North Poole Conservatives are also campaigning for a light rail system linked to commuter buses; for public/private partnerships to make our park and ride systems work and for increased use of car sharing schemes throughout the conurbation.
Development of our local economy is vital. We are campaigning for support for business in Mid Dorset and North Poole, particularly micro businesses in our rural areas and small and medium enterprises in our towns.
Rural post offices and libraries are a vital part of our communities. Mid Dorset and North Poole Conservatives oppose any post office closures and are committed to opposing closure of the libraries at Lytchett Matravers, Colehill and Corfe Mullen.
Mid Dorset and North Poole Conservatives oppose gravel extraction in the Piddle Valley and are campaigning against any resumption of these operations.
